It turned out...alright. Good enough for my very first try but not fantastic. I think I need to use more hair product, and perhaps learn to use wave clips. My grandma said she might have some old ones, but if not I'll buy some. Any tips?

When I was in beauty school I used to have my hair fingerwaved by my awesome "older lady" teacher. She was so amazing at it and I always felt so fancy when I would go to work afterwards. The best trick is to use LOTS of gel. Also make sure your hair is pretty wet/damp all over. You want to start by combing all the hair in the oppisite direction that you are going to go. Also make sure you insert the comb all the way to the scalp when pulling the hair in the desired direction. Try using the large metal duckbill clips to hold each wave in place as you go, you can find them at sallys beauty supply (about 2- 3$ for 12) You should have pretty good luck since your hair is naturally wavy, at least I think it is. :) Let me know if you have any other questions. I've been a stylist for 10 years so I have lots of knolege in this brain of mine!! Good luck, I think you did pretty darn good for your first try. FInger waves are hard to master and take some practice. You should have seen my class, it was the first thing they made us do and 5 people dropped out the first week!
i have no tips to offer, i'm terrible at styling hair period. let alone wonderful things like fingerwaves!
but I can say I think that's an EXCELLENT job! Regardless of it being your first try!
I can't wait to see the progression!
Here are some instructions that helped me! It looks like you may want to start further up, but it looks good! http://www.vividinfinity.com/fingerwave/fwpage2.html
I think Lottabody or Motions are supposed to be the best and most used setting lotions.
Pretty Pirate gave a good idea of the best way to do it. The gel is pretty flakey when you use it though. I use some setting lotion. Paul mitchelle sells some. I forget what its called... When I was in beauty school I was the fingerwave queen hahahah its part of state board so we practiced constantly !!! The trick is Always pull forward when making the S then switch back and forth from one side to the next..., and sort of pinch the curl w/ your pointer finger and middle finger... I really should make a youtube video... Its so hard to explain!!!
Looks great for a first attempt! I really like the dress too!
Ooh you look so fabulous 30s! I'm working on figuring out how to style my hair vintage - it's not going well!
here is entry from the vintagehair group on LJ. It's fingerwaves with the wave clips.

Well this post is fast becoming a great resource.. What Great Commenters You Have, Grandmamma!
It's a pretty change of pace so far; I think you'll look just sharp when you get practiced.
I might be your go to wave clip gall! My grandmother was a hairdresser for over 50 years and she didn't throw a thing away. In fact, there might even be wave clips on their original cards too! I'll be there in the next few days and I'll scrounge around for you!!
Looks beautiful, and the hair and dress are perfection.
Thanks doll,

Wave clips are so cheap. you can get them for like 3$ at Sally's. and yes they will help you so much :)
there is a killer you tube vid I posted on my blog a while back with amazing instructiosn on how to do it with wave clamps.
I would use a setting lotion too, gel will make your hair crunchy... but if you use lotta body and make sure your hair is SUPER DAMP. you should be good!
you will have to come over and we can have a fingerwaving party :) I need ot get better at it myself!
My stylist does mine with alot of gel and two combs, placing the the waves that way. Then I sit under the dryer. I come out looking like this:

I think your first attempt turned out awesome!

So cute! Fingerwaves are a tough thing to do just right. I went to beauty school so we had to do lots of um. Though, I don't think I could do them on my own head so well ;o)
I have really long hair and tried finger waves and they turned out pretty well. I used just bobby pins to hold them in until they dried. The gel I used was Garnier's Curl Shaping Spray Gel. I used it lightly so it was not crunchy.
Oh! I love your hair this way! :) I'm in awe that you did finger waves; I can't imagine getting my thick, coarse (and wavy/curly to boot!) hair to agree to a set like this, even if it was short. I just adore it on you!!! :D
Your entire outfit is far too cute, as well. You are such a style inspiration, Solanah!
Goll, I have no idea. I can't even get pin curls to turn out right. Love the dress.
Get the clips and setting lotion and I will do it for you. It is one I can actually do. Because your hair takes so long to dry you'll have to be careful not to have it too damp in the beginning.
too cute this dress reminds me of something i wore in the 90s but it was a shirt that i wore with a skirt. love this.
Yes the gel is crunchy but if you are going to comb out your hair afterward as is the traditional way to do it, the crunchy goes away. I would also suggest the setting lotion if you are going to leave it as is (w/o the brush out) This is making me want to try it on myself, I've never done it with my long hair!
I have some of the wave clips. Too bad my hair is so fine they don't really work for me. better luck next time.
The adorable factor here is through the roof! I just adore your sweetly patterned dress and charming hairstyle. I think you did great for a first attempt!
Oodles of hugs,
♥ Jessica
ok--i LOVE your hair this length and with your attempted (i think very successful!) finger-waves. i think seeing the neck on a lady is so sexy, don't you?? yay!! good move!
If you want great instructions for finger waving and combing out a vintage hairtstyle try the book "Vintage Hairstyling: retro styles with modern techniques"
I actually have this book, and can say it is GREAT for getting ideas for hairstyles with out having to dig up some old book with outdated instructions, with hair tools you can't find anywhere.
I believe they have a second edition now too, with even more hairstyles and ideas...
Type in "vintage hairstyling" in google and it is the first to come up.
They show step by step photos of how to fingerwave, and have some other styles from the 20s and 30s to try.
You should check it out! It is a great resource, and I am so glad I bought it!
The dress looks wonderful on you. I enjoyed the post very much. Love your blog!
