Here's a few pictures from a 1947 southern California yearbook I picked up a while ago. Vintage yearbooks are great resources for hairstyling ideas, and the average girls fashion choices. I get a lot of inquiries about how to dress appropriately in vintage for school. Just because it's the past, doesn't mean people dressed in petticoats and feathered hats to study in. It seems every girl had a plaid skirt, collared blouse, and cardigan. And the socks! The pages are filled with cuffed white socks, with saddle shoes, canvas tennies, loafers, and even wedge sandals. The plaid jackets in the photo below seem to be early versions of a 49er, and I love how the boy cuffed his slacks up.
As far as carrying around school supplies and books, if you want to keep the look vintage, look for a canvas or leather messenger bag, or backpack of the same material if you have a lot of textbooks.
I know this post is right at the end of the school year, but there will be another, bigger one come fall! For now just gawk at the pretty hairstyles ;)

Love it!I'm often out with my kids when the high school in my town gets out and its more often than not depressing to see the lack of style.Luckily there is always that one in the crowd that stands out and makes me smile.
I love these photos - thank you for sharing! My favorite part is those gorgeous hairstyles. It's nice to see something that's do-able for the average modern (but into vintage) girl, rather than the typical photos of movie stars or magazine models that we see so often.

I love the hairstyles! But for Gods sake, how the hell did girls with naturally straight, silky hair that won't even hold a pin, get curls like that to stay? A hairdo like that would take me hours in the morning and be flat by midday. Help anyone?

Nelly, they really do! I think just the way they put themselves together, hair, makeup, etc. For most there wasn't a long period of being a teenager like there is today. There was being a child, and being a young woman :)
Now we are times where kids want to be grown too fast I say lets go back in time!! Time travel machine anyone?/ lol
Great photos, the knitting group has inspired me to wear my wool skirt and cardi tomorrow.

Fantastic photos! I really like those low wedge shoes on the two girls in the knitting photo. I love seeing "normal" photos where you can get a feel for what people really looked like. Love to see some of that frizz in the curls, too, I admit. LOL

Love vintage yearbooks! A few years ago I was in a mad collectors craze for these. I would hunt them down at yard and estate sales. They are a wonderful reference for sure! Finding the ones from your local Universities are always neat too!

I is nice to see that "every day hair" was not always picture perfect. It makes me feel better about my hair. :) I do love their hair and outfits!
My mom (who graduated college in 1949) told me that knitting your boyfriend argyle socks was "required" in order to show your (hopefully) future husband your talents!
