Phony flapper

In 9th grade we were given an assignment to write a paper on anything we wanted.

I picked Coco Chanel.

Ever since then I've loved her, and everything she did, and designed, and wore. As a result, in high school, I was obsessed with 1920s fashions, and tried my best to emulate flappers and schoolgirls by wearing cloches, long strands of pearls, and bobbing my hair (which used to wave perfectly on it's own and look like fingewaves, oh how I miss that!).
However it was not meant to be, as my figure is the opposite of the 1920s ideal, so I looked a little "off" in the straight, low waist dresses. I still get a craving to do a 1920s look, even though it's not the most flattering thing, but hey, on one hand it's comfortable!
This dress is actually from the 1980s (Byer Too), and the cloche from the 1990s (Liz Claiborne), and I think they do a pretty good job of looking deco! I can wear them without worrying about ruining a 90 year old garment, which is always a good thing.

Speaking of Coco Chanel, I did a small post on the Coco Avant Chanel film on my other blog The Bird Hat. Oh you didn't know I had another blog? I totally do.

Ohh, I hear ya. Curvy ladies with high waists represent! But, I have friends with more boyish figures who are jealous I can wear 40s and 50s fashions so well, so it evens out. And you still look cute as a button!

Hey, I never thought about that. Different body types go better with clothes from different eras! Maybe there's hope for my body type! In what era did they have clothes for people with chubby arms and tummies? HAHAHA!

You look so cute :)
I share your affection to Coco Chanel and the 1920 even though the style does'nt fit my body type either. But 1980s dresses are a good replacement but they often have drop waists.

what's the point /focus of the other blog, as opposed to this one?

I always want to try the twenties look, too. But I always think that I look really frumpy and much larger around than I actually am.

I also can't rock cloches because I have a very large head, and I believe that hats accentuate that.

You, however, look wonderful!

I think the 20s suits you well, Solanah! After all: not every gal who lived through the 20s had the perfect, waif-ish figure (there is plenty of everyday snapshots with sartorial evidence to the contrary). ;) I love your cloche especially! It's a style of hat I adore, but cannot pull off to save my life (something about too much/too thick hair ;). lol.

I've been looking forward to seeing you wear that dress since you bought it! I used to have a weird fascination with 1920s fashion when I was about ten - I think it was down to "Some Like It Hot"! But alas, my shape decreed it was not to be.

I am exactly the opposite of a 1920s shape, but I insist on wearing it anyway, but I think you really suit the look even if you think you're the wrong shape for it. That dress is amazing, it does look really genuinely 20s!

I honestly know nothing about coco chanel other than that she left a fashion legacy. :: shrugs :: should I maybe see that film about her (or do you think it won't be accurate?)

I adore this dress of yours!!!!!!!

I have the opposite problem - when you're 5'9" with no curves, 50s fashions don't look quite right. I'd be better suited for 20s styles, but cloche hats are the only aspects of that era that appeal to me.
