We spent a day in De Smet, South Dakota, to visit more Laura Ingalls sites!
Here I am in front of the surveyors house they stayed in that Laura called "a mansion". It was of course small and simple, but would have been quite a lot for them at the time!
(there seems to be some confusion, the first photo is not the surveyors house, just the second photo, it was very small.)

There was also a replica schoolhouse.
And before heading to the Homefront (best place ever, more on that later), we walked around town a bit.

wow I would definitely not call that house small! your dress it lovely too, great neckline!
Looks like a mansion to me. . .especially since MOST of the people in the world live in one room homes. I can see how 15 people would have been able to sleep there and such now. So great to see what the Surveyor's house looked like.
So neat!
The fist photo is not the surveyors house, I forget what connection that home had to laura, but it's where we bought our ticket and they had a gift shop there, and I thought it was pretty :) The second photo is of the surveyors house, it was very, very small.
I've been reading your fabulous blog for awhile now, and can I just tell you that I'm oddly giddy that you've recently been to So Dak? I'm a SD transplant, and it's always exciting to have people visit our little state. I hope you and your fantastic aunt and uncle and cousins have had a welcoming and pleasant experience here in our state! Have fun in Wall!
oh wow! another Laura site! you lucky duck! what a fun vacation you're having :)
