June 1947 roadtrip
A few years ago I spent the better part of my visit to an antique mall pouring over a 1930s photo album, full of pictures of a group of friends picnic outings, and other adventures. I still regret not buying it.
Now every time I see a scrapbook I open it up hoping to find a collection of pictures (it seems most have them taken out), and in the back of my mind hoping it will be that one collection of pictures I left behind.
So the other day when I opened this unassuming black scrapbook, I was elated to find photos of an all girls Canadian roadtrip. After the war Americans went a little roadtrip crazy, visiting national parks and such, or wherever they could drive.
Here's what the first page reads:
"TRIP TO BANFF AND LAKE LOUISE Evelyn Clumpner Dena Wirth Cheryl Smith Doris Plaster Jean Walton
Jean, Evie, and Cheryl Leave June 12 from Seattle for Edwall at 7:00am"
From what I can gather this was Cheryl's scrapbook (most seen in plaid shirt and jeans). There's lots of other fun pics, but these are some of my faves.
In love with Evie's outfit
And Jean's lace back pants!
I think the "What a view" is meant for the scenic photo below the text. But it's funnier for the one above it. *correction, it was for that photo. Funny girls*
I wonder why they're wearing suits and heels in a cabin? Also that rug looks cool.
Camera!
Look at the ruffles on her housecoat!
These two below were taken the next year, possibly in Seattle, but I thought they were a great contrast to her roadtrip look. And that purse looks interesting

I love all of these pictures!! and by the way I am a huge fan of your blog. There isn't a post I do not read from you. Great job on your blog and i can't wait to see what you have in store for us followers this year. happy new year by the way.
What a hoot! I kind of get sad when I see old photos like this; that the family members didn't keep them in the family. My family never gets rid of pics; we have them going back to the late 1800s. That we know of. Boxes and boxes and boxes of them....:)
I love looking at photos of the past, especially looking at childhood photos of m grandparents.
This is a truly elegant bunch of ladies.

Great photos! It always makes me sad to see great family photos for sale in stores. Makes me wonder what happened to the family or why they didn't keep the photos...
Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos! It is always great to see a non-Hollywood vision of what people were wearing and doing.
Wow, this is so precious and charming! What a great find!
Wow! That a great find! The second to last photo is too cute!

Oh goodness! One of my favorite posts ever, I think. Please, please bring this to the next shoot! I MUST see it!
This scrap book is super adorable! Those lace-back pants are amazing! I'm going to be searching for a pair of those forever!
So cute! My parents have my great aunt's scrapbook, I think from the '40s, of her and her sisters (my grandma). I know there's some cute sailor outfits on the SF pier, I should find and scan!
I would love to find a scrapbook like this too! Ironically enough this is my neck of the woods. Their roadtrip went super close to my city!
Thank you SO much for sharing this! I love taking roadtrips to western National Parks and wonder if someone will be oohing and aahing over our pics someday?
I love these women - so adventurous for their day! During college, I worked summers in Banff & Jasper so really cool to see these pictures too <3 Thanks
Loved this post. What a wonderful find! Next time I'm at my mother's I'm going to have a proper look through our old family photos.
I'm with Cheri! That's my land! I would love to see the full pictures, especially any taken with buildings or landmarks to see how things might have changed :) Awesome find!
So cute! I'm going to Canada this spring and I think I'll do something like this too! Love all the day-to-day wear pictures!

I can scarcely begin to tell you how much these amazingly special vintage images warm my Canadian heart. I smiled ear-to-ear as I looked through each, remembering occasions when I myself passed through many of those same spots. Thank you very, very much, sweet dear, for sharing this fantastic slice of the past with us - I truly loved seeing it.
Wishing you a stellar New Year and only the very best in 2012!

Beautiful. Looking at old photos and magazines is the best source of vintage inspiration. x
This is so enchanting...what a lovely find! I could spend hours looking at these lovely photos and imagining the lives of each girl featured!
Fantastic! What an amazing find. I always make a beeline for old photographs. Great to see a group of independent ladies having fun!
Oh wow, those are wonderful! I love all the captions and the silliness. Such a lovely look back in to the past, thanks for sharing it with us.
I adore this post! I too spend a lot of time looking through things like this is junk shops. It makes me sad to know that someones memories are now part of house clearance - but warmed to know that there are people out there that care! Thanks for sharing :)
That is so awesome! I love vintage scrapbooks and photo albums. Thanks so much for sharing!

How fun! After my great-grandma passed this summer, the whole family went through her photos to take those they wanted. I saved two scrapbooks like these that were going to be thrown away! I guess they weren't old enough to be special to my grandma or new enough to be important to my dad's generation.
The best part about this group of photos is you can not only tell they were having a great time, you can just imagine the rest of the story---the inside jokes, the raucous parts that didn't make it into the scrapbook, lest anyone's mother be reading, just amazing!
What a fantastic collection. I have a vintage scrapbook. There are also lots of travel photos. My album spans a few years, and I love to watch people get older in the pictures. Plus the beautiful cursive script written in white ink on black pages is just lovely!
XOXO
Oh my gosh, I just love this! How adorable are they?? Makes me want to go on a road trip with my best pals :)
These are beautiful candid shots of women having fun on their own. I love that their smiles are so natural not posed and forced. I'd collect old photos but my husband says it's weird.
loveeee! i have a scrapbook of my Nanny's adventures in the 1940s and it's one of my favorite things ever.
"I wonder why they're wearing suits and heels in a cabin?"
Because that's just how classy ladies were back then!! Next time I go to a cabin, it's heels and a nice traveling suit! :)
Don't often comment here (read it all the time though :p), but I LOVE these! Photos like this bring the past alive so much, it's incredible.
I would love to use these photos for my blog when I get round to it if that's OK? I do creative writing based on vintage objects and people from the past, and these are so inspiring.

I love love love things like this. So darling. So wonderful to see what real women wore, and how they wore it. Not just how hollywood portrays how things were worn.
Oh my, love these pictures! I would love to go to Lake Louise someday...
A great idea for a blog post! Such fun pics, especially for vintage fashion inspiration ;-)
These ladies look like they have the most fun!
Looks like so much fun! Wish I was there with them. What a trip, What great pictures! Thank you. Loved it!
What a find! These girls look like they were a fun bunch!
I love this! How adventurous for that young women in that time period-- doesn't this just show you what a wealth of stories are behind some of the older ladies we meet? I'm friends with lots of my grandparents' pals and some have the same names as these women... makes me wonder what they got up to as young women!
What a fantastic find! I wonder what ended up happening to these lovely ladies and where their lives took them. xx
