Today I went to the post office and took a few pictures of the beautiful architecture and detail it holds. I absolutely love the P.O. boxes, there are a few different designs, but these have the original number plates. I just know that one day they will tear them all out, and replace them with awful gray metal boxes, and when that day comes I'll get all the old boxes and line my walls in them, and fill the boxes with buttons and thread, and random little trinkets.
After the Post Office Sam and I grabbed some lunch and took it to the nearby train station. Right across from the tracks is a metal recycling plant (I think, there was lots of metal) so we sat and watched refrigerators climb up conveyor belts. It really just made me think of all the beautiful blue 50s kitchen appliances that have probably passed through there.

That would be lovely to have some of those pretty boxes to put things in; I should like to have a few too. (Though hopefully they will stay where they are for some time.)

My mum has this wonderful wooden post office cupboard-y thing, it isn't these individual locked boxes but has about 50 open front boxes about the same size. It's from a post office here in Australia used back in th 40s and it is fantastic for displaying all my mum's wonderful bits and pieces. Practical too.
I found an old PO box turned personal bank at an antique store on Hawthorne Blvd called The Shadow House. It's on 42-3rd-ish, near Hawthorne Vintage. It's super neat!
My mom has a box at that post office. She also has an old house from the 20's there that they remodeled or rather restored. My bathroom is my favorite- they refinished the original claw foot tub and put up all the original molding back up. It is so much fun to walk downtown!
I love old fixtures in buildings like that--it makes everyday tasks so much more exciting than the bland, metal PO box! lol. It's sad to think that so many pieces like that have been discarded and dismantled over time...

I scored a set of library card boxes (the old wooden kind) a while back and love having those in my sewing room. And by the way - I LOVE that dress!!!!! It's downright adorable :)

I saw similar boxes at our town museum. They took the entire post office wicket and put it in the museum- so lovely! She said they were solid brass. The door itself was quite small but we got to pick up one and they were at least a pound!

The boxes remind me of my childhood, growing up in Woods Cross, Utah...an old railway and postal center. We had number 9 in the post office.
I also love Sam's photo with the train--Sam loved trains as a child, and no matter how old he becomes, I can still imagine him with a Lionel train or a Lego train...
