Balcony garden

Photobucket

It's kind of silly how long it took me to utilize our little balcony as more living space. Considering how small our apartment is (550 square feet), it's good to use every bit of space possible. I'm not quite finished, I still want a little bistro table for outdoor dining, and some more details here and there, but I have the garden space finished and I love it :)

We've got basil, mint, rosemary, cilantro, chives, and tomatoes. All growing like crazy! Josh and Amy are letting me use their pretty ceramic planters, and I have a wine bottle to water the plants in the morning. All housed on a vintage vanity found at a yard sale.

I found the perfect chairs at Most Everything, a vintage store downtown, thats has some really cute furniture. And the "rug" I made from a burlap sack, I just did a checkerboard stitch for strength.

So there you have it! Hopefully soon I can get those finishing touches done!

Oh, I always wanted a herb garden with basil. I currently have a herb garden which is being overrun with mint. I could give any advice, always keep mint in a pot. Definately learnt that the hard way!

Your balcony is so cute! I love your little garden. :) I have been toying around with the idea of having a little "garden" (AKA a couple potted plants) in front of the window in our kitchen (there is a little counter area behind the sink that is raised a little and would be the perfect spot).

And I definitely understand your space issues! My husband and I recently moved into a 720 square foot apartment but before that we we had a 1 bedroom that was only 530 square feet!

The place is definitely looking cozy! You're so lucky to have a vintage furniture place so close to yours! The closest "vintage" places we have are thrift stores...and they're not exactly vintage.

I wanna play with your cat. :)

I just had a pang of claustrophobia, I would look like a total hoarder if my place was 550, but then again I am a suburbanite so we're used to bigger spaces.
My comment /question is have you heard of a salad garden , once it has started growing you can trim, eat and repeat all summer. Can't wait to get mine started with my kids !

Don't forget the catnip for the kitty! I have some awesome recipes on my blog for the herbs you mention, but didn't want to list my blog here as not sure it was appropriate. If you want some delicious recipes to die for, let me know. I put in a raised bed today and hoping to move my herbs to it soon. I agree on the mint.. keep it contained or it takes over.

I love container gardening even though we just moved to a house with a decent yard. You can grow just about anything...have you thought about growing carrots, potatoes or cucumbers? I have some container cucumbers growing right now that I hope to make into pickles...

I wish we had a balcony!
I always love seeing modern (aka the Mac) mixed with old (aka your clothes)! And I might have to steal your cat!

This looks so lovely!! We recently had a BBQ on our balcony for the first time in over a year. Don't ask me why we didn't do it before. Now, like you, all I want is a little table and chair to enjoy a morning coffee and a good book.

I live in an apartment the same size as yours, but by myself. I can't imagine having to put the stuff of my boyfriend in here as well. I'm actually having trouble to believe you since I've seen your wardrobe, it would never fit into my apartment! You collect a lot of stuff, where do you place it all??? I have to be very consistent about what is allowed in my place. Only stuff I really need, the rest needs to go or is forbidden to enter.

I like what you did with your balcony. It looks very cosy.

So, so cute! (Especially the resident kitty. hehe!) I had grand plans for decorating our balcony when we moved in, but we get full sun on that side of the building, which means we only use it in the late fall through winter! :p Pretty pathetic. But I still dream of one day having a place I can fill with plants and hang out on! ;)

What a stunning little balcony you have. I have wanted to do something with my little balcony since winter but summer hit and I have yet to get on that project. I think I need to get my butt to the market and pick up some flowers A.S.A.P.
Hope you are enjoying your summer!
Much Love,

I love your table - I have one like it from my grandfather, except it's only stained, not painted.

Ahhh it looks so lovely and relaxing. Well done for growing a herb garden, I keep promising myself to start one every year but havent yet... this should be the year.
Kitty looks so comfy. :)

Adorable! It must be so nice to have your own herbs growing. They can get so expensive! I have a balcony but I only have one pot of flowers on it...it's not nearly as nice as yours!
