While in South Dakota we visited The Ingalls Homestead, a fantastic hands on attraction where the Ingalls lived and where Laura wrote about.
This little pony followed us around quite a bit, what a sweetheart!
Here is what their underground home would have looked like. It was...earthy.
Covered wagon ride was a must.
There was even a darling little schoolhouse where the girls got to put on aprons and bonnets and play games.
They even hang the laundry out to dry.
Hello again little pony!
We sat under a tree for a bit and just enjoyed being there, I highly recommend spending an afternoon there, especially if you have children!

These pictures are just breath taking! So much beauty. I love the school house and the bonnets! When I was young we lived near Mennonites and my mom bought me one of their hand made bonnets, I wore it every where.

What an awesome place to visit! I'm re-reading the Little House series right now (I just finished the 3rd book) and even came across instructions for those rag curls in the book!

This looks so neat!!! I would love to take a trip there... my mom read the entire series to me when I was little so it would be amazing to actually visit the places I could only see with my childhood imagination :)

When I was about 8, we stopped in De Smet, but only for the cottonwoods. I picked up a branch from each of them (one tree for each of Pa's girls). It was incredible that they were still standing.

Ooooh...so jealous! I live in WI, and my parents live in WY. Everytime we drive out to visit we drive past the interstate exit for De Smet. It's so far out of the way we never stop. That is going to have to change, darn it! Looks like you had a blast.
Oh, this post filled my heart with joy. I loved the books as a youth. What a very special place...wonderful that the younger ones got to experience it!

That is so beautiful, I hope that someday I get the opportunity to travel there! Laura Ingalls Wilder's books meant so much to me when I first read them when I was a little girl, it would be enchanting to see the actual places that she wrote about.

I remember when I was little and I read the "Little House..." book where they lived in the dug-out house (By the Shores of Silver Lake I think?) Anyway, that's just how I imagined it! also, that pony is adorable!

These posts just make me laugh because I grew up about 20 mins from there! haha, It's funny how differently you look at things when they are 'normal' and everyday to you. I'm glad you are enjoying my home state!

Oh my god, can you imagine growing up like that? That would be crazy. Looks like a really interesting place. I loved those books when I was a kid!
