This is what I look like when I get up in the morning.
So not.
But either way, these last three photos do show my favorite dressing gowns. Dressing gowns are another lost aspect of polite society. Basically, you would get all your undergarments on, and put a dressing gown on over that. Then you would do your makeup, hair, read the morning paper, have a cup of tea, all the lovely little domestic things. I don't know exactly how long they've been around, but in the late 50s and 60s, they evolved into housedresses (or housecoats). Little loose cotton button ups, or zip ups, that you would wear either over your dress, or in place of a dress if you were between running errands or doing housework. For me, dressing gowns are like aprons, once you buy one, you just can't stop. They're just so darn pretty!

I love houses dresses and dressing gowns!And its true they are very addictive,but hey there are a lot worse addiction we could be into.I at least get to look presentable when the mail man delivers a package to the door instead of just being caught in my pajamas!
So pretty! Love the red and love the polka dots! I always watch old movies and see them in their dressing gowns and think I don't have dresses that pretty.
What a lovely set of pictures! I lust after that red gown. And I'm intrigued by the shoes. Sigh!

I LOVE that first picture of the red gown - it's gorgeous! Now I'm going to have to go hunting for a dressing gown. I kind of have one, in a Japanese yukata-style bathrobe, but it's still really a bathrobe haha.
Also wanted to wish you a belated happy birthday! I absolutely could not believe that we are the same age - you are so much more sophisticated and lovely and elegant than I am!
We should all try and look that great in the morning, it would make the day great too.

Love the photos, you look fabulous, and your dressing gown is spot on. Mine is passed on from my mother who had it in the 70's, it's a robe type of thing, I've loved since my childhood due to the beautiful floral pattern.

I wear a dressing gown pretty often, Although I wear them before my shower at breakfast and in the morning with the computer and family running around. Yours are very pretty!
I love dressing gowns! I think I'm up to four vintage ones - a pink 1940s chenille, a blue 1930s satin, a pink/peach 40s satin, and my newest and current favorite, a cornflower blue seersucker. SO lightweight and comfy for Texas!

oh, just gorgeous. I do sooo especially love the first and last images (that polkadotted hood is just dreamy). One note regarding the idea that dressing gowns evolved into house dresses. Just wanted to point out that the more domestic house dress actually existed before and alongside the more patrician dressing gowns and hostess gowns (example: in the early 1920s and 1930s, middle class women wore and made their own house dresses:

I guess housedresses were more associated with the middleclass servantless woman, as opposed to the "My Man Godfrey" type ladies of leisure who fanned about in their boudoirs in dressing gowns and then received guests in their hostess gowns and such?).
Anyway, your dressing gowns are beautiful...you've got an enviable collection...much more elegant than a terry cloth bathrobe on a Saturday afternoon!
While it is true there were housecoats popular for the lower classes, I was trying to make the point of how dressing gowns came to not be popular anymore, a thing of the past.
I wish I had your wardrobe!
It truly depresses me how house coats such as these are not standard in society anymore - they're so lovely!

thanks for your comment, solanah. I see what you mean now...that dressing gowns declined in popularity in the 50s and 60s. I thought you meant that house dresses came into existence in the 50s and 60s, so I was just trying to show links to really cute earlier house dresses. Interesting!
