Simple cracker recipe

Here's a simple cracker recipe adapted from a 1997 issue of Martha Stewart magazine. 
It's very easy, and you can even make the dough ahead of time and roll it out the next day. 
1 Cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon sugar1/2 teaspoon pepper1 Tablespoon unsalted butter, cut up1/3 Cup + 1 Tablespoon milk
Preheat oven to 325 Fahrenheit 
Use food processor to pulse flour, salt, pepper, and sugar. Add butter, pulse until mixture looks grainy.With machine running, gradually pour in milk until you have dough. (sometimes I add a little more flour if it's too sticky)
On a lightly floured surface roll out dough, to a thin sheet. Use a pizza cutter to slice dough into squares. Transfer to ungreased baking sheet.(I use a cast iron skillet)Poke the crackers with a fork and bake for 20-25 minutes. 
Voila! Just add cheese :)

Family picnic

This weekend was our annual family picnic, lots of fun to be had!

Recent finds

I picked up this darling late 30s, early 40s hat today, look at the perfect colors in the silk!

I cleaned it up and steamed it, as it was quite misshapen and had some stains. Almost good as new now!



A couple of pretty faceted bakelite bangles I got at an estate sale for only 50 cents!

A set of pretty Italian teacups and saucers, great for everyday because they're the weight and thickness of restaurant china.

Another estate sale find, an fabulous pink wool Edith Flagg dress from the 1960s, reminds me of a poodle!

This is about the best invention ever, a belt ring! I don't know why I never heard of this before, but it's great. Perfect belt holder.

I was going to sell this cute little crochet purse, but then I found this note inside:

A red millinery plume with rhinestones! Irresistible!

Wiggle when you walk. It's good for you.

Sometimes you have to wear pants so tight you can't sit down. 
...I didn't want to sit down anyway. So there.





Two new bakelite bangles added to my collection! The two faceted red ones on the bottom. Found at an amazing estate sale, in an amazing house, for 50 cents. 

I should add, since I get asked quite a bit, that these shoes are crazy comfortable. I never thought wooden shoes would be something I would wear for days and days in a row without having to soak my tootsies at the end of the day!

Backless dress of a burlesque dancer

This dress was waiting for me at Re-Runs Vintage in Kansas City. It was meant to be mine. It was part of a collection from a woman who was a burlesque dancer in the 1930s and 1940s, unfortunately I didn't see what I can imagine would be amazing costumes, as this was one of the last frocks of hers left. I am glad I snapped this up, isn't it great? The front seems so nice and proper, but the back! Peek-a-boo!

Spring Summer 1950 fashions

Recently I found this "Spring Summer 1950 Montgomery Wards" catalogue at a local antique shop, on sale for $18! And to top it off, the book still had is't plastic wrap on it, never been opened. 

These are just a few photos of what's inside, though I'd love to do specialized posts now and then on specific things. Shoes, dresses, lingerie, suits, coats, beauty, hair, pretty little housewares. No hats though, which seems so strange! 

I would love to find a teal spiderweb dress. So cool.

These are pajamas! If I saw the second set in a vintage shop, I'd identify them as a little play set. What a cute little thing to sleep in! 

Daisies, not of the pushing variety

My lovely friend, Lucy Topp, sent me this darling little navy frock, with little daisies trimming it! How thoughtful of her :) If you are in Sydney Australia and need a professional makeup artist, she's your gal! One of these day's I'll be lucky enough to have her do mine.

And to match perfectly, these nylon gloves! How hot are they? Like lingerie for your hands. I feel like a new collection is starting. 

My hair was inspired by this photo, and although it didn't come anywhere close, I was quite happy with the result considering I used a curling iron and not pin curls. Would be much easier if I didn't have bangs to hide!

Last leg of the trip!

We did so much in such a short period of time, it's all starting to get jumbled in my head! So here's the last leg of our trip!

We made stop at Wall Drug, what a fun place! 

I found a new bunny friend. 

And while in South Dakota we stayed in The Rocket Motel, an amazing little mid century motel that's been restored to it's former glory.
The tiled bathrooms are amazing, stay there just for that reason alone!

And big fluffy buffalo!

We also stopped in Yellowstone National Park and saw Old Faithful, was pretty cool.



But my favorite thing were the prismatic springs. Amazing colors!



We also went in a cave, which was really beautiful.

And stopped in Deadwood, and had a refreshing drink at the site where Wild Bill was shot.

The cemetery in Deadwood was great, they had lots of western legends buried there.



And we also made a stop at The Battle of Little Big Horn site, where "Custer had his last stand."

And of course no roadtrip is complete without car trouble. The girls made flower crowns and spotted some deer, and we were back on the road in no time.
