Supernatural dress

This dress took a while to come up with. Since Supernatural is a modern show I didn't have an obvious vintage image to turn into a sweater, like my Superman project

So I decided to do a 1950s based outfit. I found a pattern in my favorite dress style, then worked on designing the fabric. I wanted it to look like any old 50s novelty print at a glance, but closer up it would depict kitschy looking versions of key items in the show. I struggled with what color to make the background, then one night it hit me: Deans jacket green. Duh. The fabric printed a little lighter than I uploaded, but I like it anyway.

You can find the fabric here if you want to make your own Supernatural frock.

Ruth and I had a blast taking pictures, luckily no one walked by to find two girls making circles with salt and carrying around a pie...

Wonderful job with the fabric! Spoonflower is such a great service. I hear good things about it but have never used it myself. If I were crafty like you, I'd probably make use of it. I'm content admiring what people make. :)

Wow this dress is amazing! I have never watched Supernatural, but as a sucker for a nicely cut dress and a good novelty print I am in LOVE with this dress. Have you ever considered going into fashion design? It's something I can see you doing very well in :)

Wow, I LOVE your dress! My husband and I are both big fans of Supernatural (my husband has a total man crush on Dean, and I can't say I blame him!) and this is seriously the best! :) Great job on the dress (and the pie looks good, too)!

I can't take the awesomeness of this dress. It's too much for me. I die.

What a strange coincidence - there is a post floating around on Tumblr where a girl made a circle skirt with a devil's trap on it and I was looking at it literally yesterday and thinking that I might make one! THis makes me long for an alternate version where demons are hunted by housewives of the 1950s; I would definitely watch that.

The pie is a great extra touch!

I love this dress! How awesome! Supernatural is one of my fave shows ever. I was going to order some Dr Who fabric from spoonflower to make a dress similar to this one but I really want this supernatural fabric too now! Think I'll have to save up until I can afford both as I'm sure the postage to the uk won't be cheap.
I think the supernatural fabric would suit a blouse pattern that I'm sure I have somewhere.

I apologize if I'm stupid, but you're talking about Supernatural from The CW, right? With Dean from Gilmore Girls? Well, I've never watched that, but boy, do I love Gilmore Girls!!!! Will you make me a Gilmore Girls dress that looks exactly like this, but with GG fabric??? lol

This dress is fantastic! Can I ask how much fabric you used? Just wondering how much to order myself to make one. Thanks!

Jennifer said...

Goddamn amazing on every front. Did you use a current pattern and if so, would you mind sharing which one?

I also love Supernatural and 50s clothing, so your fabric was perfect for what I wanted. I've just picked up my full circle skirted dress that a friend made for me (similar to yours, but longer), and I love it! I'm going to wear it to a SPN convention later this month. Thank you! :-)
