It's a bird! It's a plane!

 photo MaySuperman120_zps1f2ba63c.jpg

The past few months I've been working on incorporating new interests with old. That is, showing my love of comic books/supporting a fandom while still looking a bit vintage. I've been crafting a knitting and sewing project, one for Superman, and one for Supernatural, so if you're a fan of either you'll want to keep your eyes on my blog!

I just couldn't pass up this shirt last weekend, it's a little boys Superman t-shirt from 1978. Yesterday I made a circle skirt from some nice heavy denim I picked up at an estate sale for next to nothing, and I think they paired together quite well! Though the belt is the cherry on top ;)

It's funny wearing a shirt with such a recognizable symbol on it. A woman jogging passed me and said "looking good Supergirl!" and people (of all ages) would stop and compliment. It's a different attention from wearing vintage, I feel like much of the time people find full vintage outfits somewhat odd or intimidating, but something like this just makes people smile or start fun conversations. I mean, everyone know's who Superman is. Just something I observed, a different basis for interacting with strangers. It seemed more inclusive and began two sided conversations instead of the usual "You look like and old movie." "Thank you."

Which is refreshing.

Interesting thoughts! I know what you mean, actually - vintage aesthetics are lovely but definitely intimidating. I've really tone down my style over the past year as I felt it was creating barriers between people, oddly enough.

Great outfit!! Seriously so fun!

Fascinating point - being a very (!) shy person, I don't mind the brief interactions you mentioned, but can completely see the pros of longer, two sided chats with strangers, too.

You look nothing short - fittingly - of super, dear gal. I love your handmade denim circle skirt (talk about a stellar wardrobe staple).

You are absolutely adorable! Everything in this look is spot on, from the hair to the makeup to the clothes. It looks like you stepped out of an old comic book.

Also, I'm in awe that you made that skirt; I can't sew to save my life.

Very pretty! I love wearing Superman shirts since my name also starts with an "S" but I have a hard time finding shirts that I like. Usually it´s just a big t-shirt and that´s not what I'm looking for. This was super cute though!

Simona

I really like this outfit, and it definitely makes me want to do the same. I have a lot of printed t-shirts that I don't really wear anymore, but obviously pairing them with a circle skirt is the way to go as it looks fantastic!

Love this!! wonderful skirt as well.

That is really cool! I've been making things inspired by movies or tv-shows that I love as well, but very loosely inspired... I'm curious to see what you come up with for Supernatural (trenchcoat or plaid?)

love this look! sometimes combining stuff like this looks really great, and you still don't have to totally go out of your comfort zone. always good to put a twist on things!

My first thought was, "oh she made that skirt yesterday, did she let it hang for the bias to stretch out?!" ^^
The skirt is totally lovely, as the others said before me, the whole outfit is just amazing, funny and cute.

It is so funny you say that about people being more open with the Superman t-shirt on. As soon as my 4 yo puts her Superman t-shirt on (with cape attached) people pop out of nowhere ' hey Super girl!' It's amazing what it brings out of people, especially when females where it. You look fabulous.

This is the best! Seriously awesome outfit. Now I need to replicate it. I want to be superman for a day....must add a cape though.

I absolutely love this! You look adorable! The vintage twist is just perfect. I know what you mean about people being intimidated by full vintage outfits. I wore a full circle skirt dress I made, with a (small not super poofy) crinoline underneath, to the movies on Christmas Day, and most people looked at me like I was a weirdo. But some gave me little smiles because they thought it was cute. It's tough out there. But whenever I see a girl (such as yourself) bold enough to wear beautiful vintage frequently, it makes me smile. Love your style! :)

fantastic... huge fan of the look and superman-style!

if okay, i would like to make it more artistically vintage?

Perfect outfit, as always! Love the mix of old and new.

OMG, I love this soooo much! I'm a total comic book geek and I love superman AND supernatural. Can't wait to see what else you come up with!

That is so very interesting about the people who complimented you and I can understand what you mean though with how some people just seem confused when seeing a girl dressed in a beautiful vintage outfit compared to one with a recognizable symbol.
You do look adorable!

This is absolutely amazing. I love that you chose boots instead of heels. The practical touch makes you look very heroic.

This outfit is just so fun! I really love the skirt you made - you did such a great job!

Ha, that lady's comment makes me think of the 'Supergirl' song from the Princess Diaries movie. :)

You do look fab!!

It's interesting what a different reaction you get, too. When I stopped worrying about vintage styling (ie, perfect hair and red lips, heels, etc.) I found I actually got many more compliments and people seemed warmer. "What a great dress!" opens up more room for chat and conversation than the ol' "you look like you're from an old film". (Still love OTT vintage glamour now and then, though ;)

Looking good, indeed! It's hard sometimes to incorporate modern things with a love for vintage but you definitely did a great job here. Awesome skirt :)

I like to mix my vintage with my fandoms too (Supernatural and Doctor Who mostly). I think comics and vintage dressing go hand-in-hand.

This outfit is so adorable! I love that the t-shirt has such a high neck that the silhouette looks like you're wearing a vintage sweater or something. Really cute idea.

I was at CVS one day while wearing my new batman knee high socks(black and yellow stripes with bat symbol on ankles). The guy working at CVS calls out to me and asks me where I got my socks at, I said C2E2. He then asked me, this year? I said yes. All he could say was COOOL! That totally made my evening.

Thanks Solanah for the T-shirt inspiration. I was trying to figure out how to incorporate my captain america T-shirt into my vintage wardrobe.
