The Flamenco dress

Photobucket
Oh hi. Yeah.

Just a 1940s Flamenco dress.

Y'know. Another day in the life.

I found this beauty at an antique store this week, and fell in love with the wrinkly old cotton frock. I bought it without trying it on, the shape was a little lackluster on a hanger, but as soon as I put it on, I reeeeealy didn't want to take it off. But I ironed out the endless wrinkled ruffles, and then realized the base is just one big ruffled circle skirt, so I tried a petticoat. Then another. Then hey, why not? Another.

I pinned them to my girdle for that fishtail look, and it worked out pretty well!

I wore it to my mothers fabulous Italian party, and while Flamenco dance is Spanish, the colors match up with the Italian flag, sooooo, it works out alright.

I've always wanted a Flamenco dress, I remember watching a festival on tv when I was a little girl and being completely enchanted by the mountains of ruffles.

I'm just gonna go ahead and wear this all the time.

I love the colors of the ruffles underneath, very Italian (and a little Mexican). I had to wear a similar dress as a kid, but it must be so much fun to wear it nowadays! x

So pretty! I love how many petticoats you own. I wish I could own just one even, but they are NZD$90 here. That's a bit much for one petticoat. Instead I bought a half slip for $2.50 :D

Oh my gosh--was there ever a dress more suited to you, Solanah?! I just love it--it's dramatic and fun, and the colors are gorgeous. You look amazing! :) I've always loved Flaminco styles, and for a while toyed with the idea of using the Folkwear Flaminco dress pattern as a base for a ball gown to wear to the annual Navy Ball. ;) Hmm... Totally rethinknig that idea right now! hehe.

I aggree with Valerie, I was made to wear flamenco dresses as a child and ended up hating them! Of course, back then they were unflattering and hardly stylish (wonderful idea you had there with the petticoats, they give yours a real modern flare. That 40s dress is beautiful, you should have seem some of the horrible dresses we were made to wear in the 80s!!). Nowaday's dresses are a totally different story, really elegant, seductive and dressy (designs by experts like Victorio & Lucchino can really blow your mind). Funny how a dress that was originally worn by peasants has become a bit of a luxury item, at least here in Spain.
